Established around the middle of the 18th century, the borough is one of those very few areas where the population is almost the same as it had been for over 1 century – the population was at 2,242 in 1890 and was just 3,141 in the 2000 Census!
Bedford was once famous for its medicinal springs; thus, Bedford Springs Hotel was constructed to accommodate the influx of tourists while a spa was built near the springs. This hotel became the first in the country to have an Olympic-sized swimming pool; it was also called the “summer White House” of President James Buchanan who received the first trans-Atlantic cable message at the hotel from Queen Victoria. The hotel also became the venue of the only Supreme Court hearing not held within the Capital.
Another popular landmark in Bedford is a coffee-pot-shaped building which had once been a diner but is now an attraction at the Bedford County Fairgrounds. Tourists should also take time to visit The National Museum of the American Coverlet.
