Lebanon)
or Beirut accommodation? Beirut, apart from being the capital, is also by far the biggest city in Lebanon. The best pocket map, Beirut Map, is available free of charge from all hotels, as well as all Virgin Megastore branches throughout Beirut. Downtown, in the heart of the city, beside the Beirut Port and Beirut Marina, includes many cafes, restaurants and places to shop, and is also home to many historical sites. Ashrafieh is the centre of western themed life and nightlife in the city. Ain El Mraiseh is a seafront district with plenty of hotels and restaurants. Hamra is a hive of activity and a shoppers’ paradise, with larger chains of restaurants and cafes opening there, including Starbucks, Costa, Nandos and Roadsters. Ramlet El Baida is a residential area, where you will find Beirut’s only public beach, and is also the only beach featuring any sand. Verdun is a very trendy shopping area, where you’ll find most hotels and shops, cafes and restaurants. Many Gulf Arabs stay here during the summer months. The best way to get into Beirut is by air. To get around Beirut, you have the option of Hail Taxis or Pre-Book Taxis. You also have the option of Service Taxis, which are much cheaper, as they are usually shared by four people and the fare is thus divided. There is also an extremely efficient bus service, the buses come very often, and will stop anywhere to pick up and drop off passengers. Using a car to get around is not a good idea as traffic is heavy, parking is very difficult to find, and, if you are lucky enough to find off-street parking, you are only allowed to park for two hours. As the city is quite compact, walking is an ideal way to get around. If you get lost, as any passer-by for directions – no one will refuse to help you. Some of the landmarks in Beirut are Pigeon Rocks, Solidere Clock Tower, Martyr’s Statue and Jeita’s Grotto. Museums, galleries, parks and squares are many, and anyone will direct you to whichever of these you wish to visit. Any Virgin Megastore will be able to keep you up to date with festivals and events in and around the city. There are an unlimited amount of things to do in Beirut. Beirut is the fashion capital of Beirut, which boast fashion designers that rival some of the best in the world. Hamra and Mar-Elias streets, and Rue Verdun are some of the busy shopping streets around the city, with many shopping centers to choose from. Occasional organized markets are held that are made to resemble flea markets. Souk El Tayeb is a great place to buy locally made cheese, honey and bread as well as handcrafts. There is a Sunday market, which is held next to the Beirut River where you’ll find antique jewelry, clothing and beads. Burj Hammoud is the perfect place to shop for cheap bric-a-brac, artisan’s crafts, and copper and brassware. Lebanese cuisine enjoys a worldwide reputation for its richness and variety and its Mediterranean health factor. There are many eateries to choose from, including fast food outlets to restaurants with different price ranges to suit everyone’s pocket. Cafes, pubs and nightclubs abound in Beirut and the best way to find out what’s happening where, is to check the local press. There are many hotels available, from cheap hostels to luxury hotels, with prices that are relatively high, but if you look properly, you will find something to suit your budget. One of the luxury hotels is the Moevenpick Hotel and Resort, that is the only city centre hotel with resort facilities, located in the heart of bustling Beirut. - Browse the Beirut Map or compare Beirut accommodation from Hotels, Motels, B&Bs,
