Located on an area where the Passagassawakeag River and Penobscot Bay meet, the city had once been a shipbuilding center during the height of its wooden ship construction period. The economy shifted from shipbuilding to seafood harvesting to shoe manufacturing to poultry industry to a financial one when the MBNA credit card giant constructed a large facility in the city.
Today, the seaport continues to be an important part of the city’s economy as well as being a popular tourist attraction due to many historic districts that feature antique buildings and architecture. Belfast is home to Perry’s Nut House which had once featured numerous animal sculptures outside and taxidermy animals inside; although a previous owner auctioned many of the displays, the new owners have attempted to buy back the auctioned items.
