The town is the largest in Southern Vermont in terms of population; it is also the location of the tallest structure in the state – Bennington Battle Monument.
Bennington was named after Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth who chartered the area on January 3, 1749. Granted to William Williams, the town was settled in 1761 by families led by Capt. Samuel Robinson. The original settlement was named as Old Bennington when the town grew to include two other districts – Downtown Bennington and North Bennington.
