or Bergerac accommodation? Bergerac is the largest town in the Périgord Pourpre area, of France. The area got its name its name from the purple grapes that grow in the region's of vineyards. The most famous wines are the sweet whites produced around Monbazillac. On the plains of the Dordogne, Bergerac is a contemporary town with dotted bits and pieces from its attractive and violent past. In the 16th century it was a Protestant stronghold and it endured much damage during that period. However, the old city and harbour have preserved their charisma, which makes Bergerac a good place to stop if you are heading west.
Bergerac is a little city that celebrates a long history and is centered on old river port where you can see rows of medieval half-timbered houses that lean over narrow alleyways, such as in Saint-Clar Street, take a stroll and view the stylish 17th century houses in places like the Rue l’Ancien-Pont, while you will see swans swimming in the Dordogne River, and flowers sprinkled around its squares. The city’s largest square is the Pélissière Place with many little shops that draws you to its charm. A gentle walk around the city will reveal interesting views like the statue of Cyrano de Bergerac, and plenty of street markets buzzing with activity. Then, of course, there are Bergerac’s restaurants that come to life in the evenings. It is possible to enjoy the finest truffles or wild boar with one of Bergerac’s world-famous wines.
If you are fascinated by wine or tobacco trades, there are two museums worth a look in the old town, namely the Musée du Tabac, built in a 17th century house, has collections of pipes and tools to show the history. The Musée Régional de la Batellerie contains displays about the river-trade.
