Switzerland)
or Berne accommodation? Berne is the capital of Switzerland and it is here where the absolutely delicious chocolate Toblerone comes from. It has preserved its medieval history in its architecture and this has earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. One of the city’s most famous sights is the Zytglogge or the Time Bell which is an old medieval clock tower with moving puppets. Berne has a lot more to offer the eyes as there are quite a few museums and sights to visit. There is the Berne Historical Museum, Switzerland’s second biggest history museum, Einsteinhaus, where Einstein himself stayed for a while, the Kunstmuseum which is Switzerland’s oldest museum and the Swiss Alpine Museum. Here you will also find the highest Gothic cathedral in Switzerland, called the Münster Cathedral. In fact, the whole city is pulsating with images from yesteryear with its towers and sculptures and arcades and ancient fountains on every corner.
If museums aren’t your cup of tea you can either go to the zoo, enjoy a play at any of the theaters, go for a walk in the Rose garden, go shopping in one of the longest shopping promenades in Europe or walk up Gurten, a hill with a spectacular view where you can picnic, play ball or just lie in the sun. On hot days you can join many of the locals as they go swimming in the Aare River.
Eating out can become a pricey affair, especially if you are looking for genuine Swiss cuisine. The locals seem to prefer Italian or Asian food but even this does not come cheap. If you find yourself more thirsty than hungry you have a wide variety of pubs and bars to choose from and if it is dancing you are after then the Wasserwerk Club is the place to be.
Berne also hosts a few events and festivals throughout the year. There is the International Jazz Festival in March, the Gurtenfestival in July and the Buskers Bern which is a street music festival.
If you are looking for a fairly cheap place to stay without sacrificing quality, then the Landhaus is your place. Got a little bit more to spend? Book yourself into the Metropole. However, if you want to splurge then you need to stay at the 5 star Bellevue Palace. - Browse the Berne Map or compare Berne accommodation from Hotels, Motels, B&Bs,
