A major steel center in the 1800s up to the 20th century, Bessemer was created out of the vision of Henry Fairchild DeBardeleben who came to Birmingham and founded one of the first buildings in the city which housed the Bessemer Land and Improvement Company. His efforts led to a population boom in the area as well as a growth in business.
Popular attractions in the area include the Alabama Adventure Theme park, formerly known as Visionland, Brightstar, known as the oldest continuously-operated establishment in the area, the Watercress Darter National Wildlife Refuge which was built to protect the endangered watercress darter, and the Bessemer Hall of History. Brightstar started off as a small cafe in 1907 that eventually grew into a restaurant and eventually into a well-loved Bessemer landmark. The Bessemer Hall of History is a museum located at 1905 Alabama avenue the building that formerly housed the ASG depot.
The downtown area is also a historic district. Other historic attractions include the Dr. Thomas McAdory Owen House and the Owen Plantation House.
