Along with the villages Endicott and Johnson City, Binghamton belongs to the “Triple Cities”. The city had also been called as “Parlor City” and as the “Valley of Opportunity”.
The city is named after William Bingham but it was originally known as Chenango Point then as the Town of Binghamton in 1834; it later became a city in 1867. The city is home to the largest public observatory in the northeastern United States, the Kopernik Space Center. Also, it is home to the renowned Binghamton University. Other popular attractions in the area include the Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park which is the fifth oldest zoo in the country, Roberson Museum and Science Center, Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, and the Old, Odd and Unique antique store.
Two river systems pass through Binghamton – Susquehanna River and Chenango River. These rivers provide the city with beautiful attractions and various water activities but had also been the cause of flooding and damage in the city throughout its history.
