or Blowing Rock accommodation? Blowing Rock is a popular resort and summer town located in both Watauga County and Caldwell County in North Carolina, United States. Based on data from the 2000 Census, the city only has a year-round population of 1,418 but this number greatly increases to around 10,000 during the summer months.
The Town of Blowing Rock was actually named from a geological feature with the same name; it has an unusual form and is the subject of an Indian lore which, although fictional, is strongly associated with the town and is used to attract visitors to the town. The lore is about two lovers who became the rival tribes of Catawba and Cherokee Native Americans. While walking, the man was summoned to the village but the woman wanted him to stay – distraught, he flung himself unto the gorge below the rock. Fearing for his life, the woman called to the Great Spirit who quickly responded and a gust of wind sent the man back on the rock.
Aside from the popular Blowing Rock feature which is known to be the oldest travel attraction in the state, the town is also visited for its other points of interest. Among these are the Tweetsie Railroad Theme Park, Mariam & Robert Hayes Performing Arts Center, and Blue Ridge Parkway which offers views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
