or Bodrum accommodation? Bodrum, formerly Halicarnassus, is a city in Turkey located in its Mugal Province. It is a port town and is one of the top tourist draws in the country. The city sits on the south coast of the Bodrum Peninsula. Yachting is also an important part of Bodrum’s culture and industry. It is home to the Bodrum Castle, which overlooks the Marina and was constructed by the Crusaders.
The city was initially colonized by Dorian Greeks in the 7th century BC. It later came under Persian rule where it served as the capital city of Caria. A famed native of Bodrum was the Greek historian Herodotus. In the 15th century, crusader knights arrived in Bodrum and constructed Bodrum castle. The castle still stands today and is of particular importance as it is one of the last examples of architecture by the Crusaders.
Fishing and sponge diving were the main economic resource of Bodrum. By the 20th century, however, Bodrum began to be recognized as a tourist and trade center. Markets in the city flourished during the 1930s. The city was also known for the intellectuals who chose to reside there. Today, tourism revolves around Bodrum’s culture, seascape, and yachting community. Twin towns for Bodrum include Aalborg in Denmark, Pleven in Bulgaria, and Haskovo, also in Bulgaria.
