or Brescia accommodation? The historic town of Brescia is located in the north of Italy between Verona and Milan. It is an excellent base from which to tour the beautiful Lakes of Iseo and Garda. The town has a number of cultural and historical sites worth looking at.
The 14th century Duomo Vecchio is a beautiful Romanesque building which highlights interesting paintings by Romanino and Moretto and the sarcophagus of Bishop Berardo Maggi. The Duomo Novo built in the 1600s has a Baroque lower part and is Neoclassic over the portal with a Greek design on the interior. San Fransesco is a beautiful 13th century church done in Romanesque style and features masterpieces by Romanino. Santi Nazario e Celso is a must see as it contains the legendary masterpiece, the Averoldi polyptych by Titian. The Santa Maria dei Miracoli is considered a jewel of Lombard Renaissance sculpture. The Museo della Città - Monastery of Santa Giulia is a museum housing important middle age exhibits and was founded in 753 by the Lombard King Desiderio. The Museum of Ancient Arms houses one of the most important collections of ancient arms in Europe while the Museo del Risorgimento displays canvases, prints, letters, announcements, decrees, coins and knickknacks from the Italian Unification and the end of Venetian domination until 1870. The Pinacoteca Civica Tosio-Martinengo features important Italian painting collections. Important buildings and monuments include the Tempio Capitolino e Teatro Romano made in 74 BC, the 12th century castle which houses the Museo delle Armi Antiche and the Museo del Risorgimento and the 11th century Brolett.
Brescia hosts a number of cultural and other events. These include the Fair of San Faustino and Giovita in February which is the city’s largest fair, the International Piano Festival from April to June, the international regatta on Lake Garda called Centomiglia held at the beginning of September and the lively Festival of Franciacorta also in September. A variety of restaurants and lovely shopping areas exist in the town and should be explored before you leave this charming city.
