It lies on the central Spanish plain, and is the capital of the Burgos Province in Castile and Leon. To reach Burgos by air, you will have to fly in from Barcelona, Paris, or Palma de Mallorca, as these are the only flights that the airport receives. There is a railway station, which means that you can take a train into Burgos from elsewhere in Spain, as well as from Paris. There is strong evidence to suggest that the area around Burgos was inhabited by prehistoric man, but the generally accepted view is that the city was founded by the Romans. It was in the 9th century AD that Alfonso II the Great, then king of Castile, reconquered it, and it was in 884 AD that Burgos Castle was built to defend the city, along with several others in the area. The Burgos Cathedral, monastery of Las Huelgas, and the Carthusian Monastery are all historic churches in the city that are generally considered to be must see attractions. There are also the city walls and gates, as well as many other small churches and buildings that are well worth visiting.
