or Burnsville accommodation? Burnsville is a city in Dakota County in the State of Minnesota, United States. The US Census Bureau estimates the population of the city to be at 59,118 in 2007; it has an area of 69.3 square kilometers. It is possible that the city’s name was derived from an erroneous entry of the family name of William Byrne as “Burns”; Byrne is Irish and is an early settler and landowner in the area.
Like many areas in the country, the land on which the city was built had once been inhabited by an American Indian tribe called the Mdewakanton Dakota. The land was ceded by the Dakota nation in 1851 and it was soon inhabited by Irish and Scottish farmers.
Byrne was one of owners of large portions of land – he subsequently donated portions of this land for the school, church, and cemetery. Being the Town Chairman and local philanthropist, the area was named as the Byrnesville Township in 1858. However, entries of “Burns” and “Byrnes” are often interchanged so that by the time that the city was incorporated in the 1960s, the “Burnsville” was already the prevailing spelling.
Renowned landmarks in Burnsville include the Burnsville Center (a mall), Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve, Crystal Lake, Burnsville Ice Center, and Burnsville Skate Park, and the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
