or Canakkale accommodation? The city of Canakkale is in the Marmara area of Turkey, and, while the city is modern, it’s the history of the area that draws tourists. In fact, the city of Canakkale has been inhabited since around 3000 BC, albeit with different names, including Hellespontos and Dardanelles. To reach this historic city on the Canakkale Strait, you can take a bus or car from Istanbul, or, in good weather, a boat up the strait. Be warned though that the strait is closed to shipping traffic when the weather is not good. Within the city of Canakkale, you will find the ancient city of Abydos, which is where the ancient story of Hero and Leander took place, and the Archaeological Museum, which is about thirty minutes from the city itself, will show you more about the long and interesting history of the area. The historic and famous area of Gallipoli is also nearby, on the opposite side of the strait.
