Canterbury, in Kent, is probably best known for its cathedral, but this city has a long and illustrious history, dating back to the middle ages and earlier, and was featured in famed poet Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales in the 14th century. To reach Canterbury, you will need to drive, take a coach or bus, or take the train from London or another major centre. Walking will take you to most of the attractions in the centre of town, but there are buses and taxis as well. Canterbury Cathedral is, of course, a must see. You can see the tombs of King Henry IV and others, and view the scene of the murder of Thomas a Becket in the twelfth century. Then there’s the Canterbury Castle, which is the ruin of an 11th century castle, and St Martin’s Church, a Roman shrine, and the oldest parish church still in use in England. Museums also abound in Canterbury, and one that’s definitely worth visiting is the Medieval Misadventures in the St Margaret’s Church, which is a recreation of the Middle Ages, featuring characters from the Canterbury Tales. Another is the Canterbury Roman Museum, which displays artifacts and exhibits related to the town during Roman times.
