or Cape Town accommodation? Cape Town, the provincial center of the Western Cape, is the 2nd most populated city in South Africa. Other than being a center for the Western Cape, Cape Town is also the legislative center for South Africa and holds many government offices. The city is a thriving tourist draw and is most known for its harbor as well as for its beaches and tourist culture.
The city was founded in the mid 17th century. It was initially developed with the help of the Dutch East India Trading Company. The first European settlement in South Africa occurred with the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck to the city. Soon the city outgrew its original purpose as port city and European outpost. It became a hub for culture and economics. Until the Johannesburg was developed, Cape Town was the largest city in South Africa.
Cape Town is the second most important economic center in the country. Its economy revolves around finance, commerce, service and tourism. It has also recently experienced a boom in its construction and real estate industries.
The city is arguably South Africa’s most popular tourist draw. Most of the tourists who visit Cape Town gravitate towards the beaches. The city, however, has other things to offer including Cape Point and Table Mountain. The city is also peppered with landmarks including the Castle of Good Hope, Long Street, the City Bowl, Clifton, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and Bo-Kaap.
The Cape Town International Airport serves the city. The city also has a rail system and is also served by taxis and buses. Most of Cape Town’s transport systems are undergoing upgrades in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa.
