Carloforte Accommodation

Carloforte was founded in 1738 by Ligurian fishermen originally from the Genoese suburb of Pegli. The city was named after King of Pidmont, by Carlo Emanuele and has a statute erected in the town.

Carloforte’s landscape is mountainous and green, abounding with pine groves, junipers and strawberries. The Phoenicians called it Sparrow-Hawk Island, because of the numerous birds that feed on the flourishing fruits.

The towns’ coastline is spectacular and ranges from the northern beaches of Cala Lunga and Cala Fico, to the panoramic Capo Sandalo with its lighthouse, on the western shores; to the rocky cliffs of Mezzaluna and the breathtaking pinnacles called "Le Colonne" in the south. The excellent beaches, both rocky and sandy, line the coast of the town where various water sports and swimming can be enjoyed.

Some of Carloforte main attractions are the Capo Sandalo Lighthouse, the local church, Chiesa dei Novelli Innocenti and the ruins of some of the buildings which are of great architectural interest. San Carlo is one of the most distinguished fishing villages in the region with its bastions and defense walls, memories of the ever present pirate threat and is definitely worth a visit.
