or Chincoteague Island accommodation? Located in Accomack County’s Chincoteague Island in Virginia, Chincoteague, known for its Chincoteague Ponies. These ponies descended from domesticated stock which was brought into the island by seventeenth century Eastern Shore farmers to avoid government requirements for fencing.
The town has a never-ending love affair with ponies. In fact, since 1925, an annual Pony Swim has been held in Chincoteague. In this event, ponies are made to swim across shallow water between the islands of Chincoteague and Assateague. All the horses are then herded into giant pens after they run through the town center on Main Street. The event ends with a Wild Pony Auction. This event takes place on the last Wednesday in July.
The best way to see many places in the island is to take a cruise with a local captain, if not, at least a bus tour.
