The municipality is divided into four divisions, nineteen districts, seventeen counties and four autonomous counties. It is the largest and most populated municipality in the country, and in fact, it has recorded an astounding 31.4 million residents in 2005.
Chongqing is considered to be a semi-mythical State of Ba. Founded in the 11th century B.C., the name of the city was derived from an old name of the Jialing River that passes through the city and goes into the Yangtze River.
Historically, the city was the first inland port that became open to foreign trade. At present, Chongqing is one of the key places in China that are rapidly progressing and developing. It is considered also as one of the most urbanized cities in the country. Although trade is somehow limited due to the location of the city as an inland municipality, it is successful in its major industries. Some of these industries include food processing, auto manufacturing, chemicals, textile, machinery and electronics. It has several economic and technological zones namely Chongqing Industrial Park, Chongqing Economic & Technological Development Zone, Chongqing New North Zone, Jianqiao Industrial Park and Chongqing Export Processing Zone. Moreover, the area is home to military bases and research development.
Some landmarks to see in the area are the People’s Liberation Monument, The General Vinegar Joe Stillwell Museum, Red Rock Village Museum, the Dazu Rock Carvings, The Natural Bridges, Ciqikou and the fishing city of Fishing Town.
