Founded in 1899 by JL Avant and EE Blake, it was first named as Washita Junction after the Washita River Valley but because the post office would not accept such name, the town was renamed as Clinton in honor of the late Judge Clinton Irwin.
Clinton is home to several buildings listed under the National Register of Historic Places: the Clinton Armory, McLain Rogers Park, Crawford House, and Y Service Station and Café. Visitors have the chance to trace the history of the city and see the many artifacts of its yesteryears at the Cheyenne Cultural Center and the Route 66 Museum situated at the city’s historic US Route 66.
