or Colombo accommodation? The city of Colombo is Sri Lanka’s financial and commercial capital, as well as the largest city in the country. It is no longer the administrative capital, and although it is a very popular tourist destination, it is wise to plan your visit for November to April, which is monsoon season. Bandaranaike International Airport, which is in Katanayake, is about an hour’s taxi ride from the city, but it is the best way to fly into Colombo. There are a few local flights into the city, but if you do decide to fly into the city itself, make sure you plan carefully. There are also buses, trains, and boats into the city. Once there, taxis and buses are a great way to see the city. When in Colombo, be sure to visit the local museums, which will teach you more about this fascinating country and its people. These include the Natural History Museum, and the National Museum, as well as the Dutch Period Museum, which commemorates the country’s history as a Dutch Colony. The Colombo Zoological Gardens are another great place to visit while in the city. Make sure you plan your trip to the zoo to see the daily elephant show, which happens around 5PM every day. Local cuisine is another attraction, and is typically south East Asian, with spicy, exotic flavors. There are restaurants and street vendors throughout the city, so you should have no trouble finding local or international cuisine.
