Right next to the home is Polk Sister’s House, where ball gowns, jewels and other Polk memorabilia are on display. Another Columbia historic landmark is the Athenaeum Rectory, which was built by the nephew of the President in 1835 following unusual Gothic style of architecture.

For a sample of plantation life in old Tennessee, the Rippavilla is an ideal stop to one’s itinerary, more so because it is the information hub for visitors to the region. This building dates back to 1852 and houses museums of historic homes and artifacts from the Civil War. Other historic sites include the Historic Dowtown Columbia, St. John's at Ashwood, and Historic Elms Spring. An outdoor adventure, on the other hand, will be worthwhile by exploring the wild caves of Southport Saltpeter Cave; and by taking a trip to Williamsport Fishing Lakes, where tourists can fish in its four lakes or sightsee in its 1,850 acres of forest.
