The city was once named Tiptonia in honor of General John Tipton as he, along with Luke Bonesteel, was co-owner of the land that the city – then a town – was founded on in 1820. Then, on March 20, 1821, the name of the town was changed to Columbus prompting a dismayed and upset Tipton to move out of town.

The city is also known to be an international architectural showcase with its notable national historical landmarks and sculptures such as the North Christian Church, First Baptist Church, Lincoln Elementary School, Fire Station #4, Cleo Rogers Memorial Library, and sculptures Large Arch and Chaos I. The oldest theater in the state – the Crump Theatre – which still features various shows and performances from time to time is also located in the city.
