It is not clear how the city got its name, but it was perhaps named after James Corbin Floyd, a local minister. Corbin was incorporated in 1905 but earnest economic growth only started to be seen in the city with the completion and operation of the L&N Railroad. Businesses that contribute to the local economy include automotive companies, call centers, the Baptist Regional Medical Center, to name a few.

Corbin lies on a plateau region of Appalachia, near the Pine Mountain Overthrust Fault. Attractions to see in the city include Corbin Falls State Resort Park, which is otherwise known as the Niagara of the South, Harland Sanders Museum and Cafe, the annual NIBROC festival and the Cumberland Railroad Museum. Harland Sanders Museum and Cafe was the original restaurant of the Kentucky Fried Chicken Founder. Built in 1937, the cafe has since undergone several restorations and has been placed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Corbin Falls Park is home to a 17-mile hiking trail that connects with other trails in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

The NIBROC festival is an annual festival that draws people from all over the state. It features amusement rides, arts and crafts, concessions, beauty pageants, sports competitions and motor shows.
