It is part of the Crisp County of the state and is known as the ‘Watermelon Capital of the World.’ The town was founded in 1888 by J.E.D. Ship of Americus. It was also the first area to hold the first county-owned electric system through the Crisp County Hydroelectric System.
Keepers of the city’s history along with nearby territories are housed in its numerous museums. Among these museums are the Georgia Veterans Memorial State Museum, Cotton Museum, Georgia Rural Telephone Museum, Warner Robins Museum, and Andersonville National Historic Site.
Cordele’s Lake Blackshear, the largest recreation facility in the county, is a popular site for fishing and skiing. The city is also the home of the fastest 3/8 mile paved oval speedway, known as the ‘Watermelon Capital Speedway.’ Other interesting tourist spots in the city are the Flint River Aquarium, Georgia Veterans Memorial Park, Providence Canyon State Park, and shopping centers like Cordele Square, Crisp Plaza, and Southgate.
