The city was originally settled into by Europeans in 1800. In 1813, John Wharton Collins established a town here named Wharton.

The city was renamed after an 1812 war hero General Leonard Covington. Commerce was brought into Covington via boat up the Bogue Falaya which connects Lake Pontchartrain to Tchefuncte River.

In the late twentieth century, many people who worked in New Orleans began living in Covington and commuted across on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Lake Pontchartrain. Currently, the town’s population continues to grow.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Covington experienced a population boom as a result of many New Orleans inhabitants relocating to escape their homes which got destroyed in the storm.

Many Hollywood films have also been made in Covington including Dead Man Walking, Kingfish, Kasi Lemmon’s Eve’s Bayou, Gretchen Zieske, The Yellow Handkerchief and I Love You Philip Morris.
