The city was settled by European colonizers in the 1800s which were led by Jacques Dreux. The first settlement in the area was named Wharton but was later renamed in honor of General Leonard Covington who was a hero in the War of 1812. It is famously known as having six homes that are valued at USD$1 million dollars or more.
In the time of Hurricane Katrina, which made a land-fall in the nearby town of Slidell, Louisiana, Covington was fortunately elevated enough to escape the massive surge of the storm. Following Katrina, Covington experiences a massive population boom as a result of many former New Orleans inhabitants relocating into the area.
One of the great attractions in the city is the Farmer’s Market which congregates every Saturday mornings on the grounds at the City Hall. Covington also features the Three Rivers Art Festival where local performers and artists showcase their works and culture.
