The city of Cuneo is the capital of a province by the same name, in Piedmont, Italy, and is located near the foot of the Maritime Alps, as well as on the banks of the Stura di Demonte River. This is a city with a long and interesting history. In 1198, tired of the rule of the bishops in the area, the people themselves founded Cuneo, and declared themselves independent from bishopric rule. Battles with the former lords ensued, but in 1238, they were declared an independent community by the Emperor Frederick the second himself. That independence was short lived, as the city decided to place itself under the rule of Naples just a few short years later. Many historic sites remain from those early days of Cuneo. Some that are worth visiting include the Villa Oldofredi Tadini, a former watchtower that was built in the 14th century, and is now a museum, as well as the Civic Museum, the Railway Museum, and others. There are also historic churches, like the San Giovanni Decollato, which contain important artworks and artifacts. Villa Tornaforte, on the other hand was a private residence, and is still surrounded by an English style park, which is a pleasant place to spend a day. Make sure that while you are in Cuneo, you sample the local delicacy, Cuneesi al Rhum, which are chocolates with a delicious rum filling. You will find the oldest producer of these chocolates, Arione, in the Piazza Galimberti in the centre of the city.
