The City of Daphne in Baldwin County of the State of Alabama in the United States is the most populous city in the county with 16,581 residents based on the 2000 Census – the population has increased to 18,000 according to the 2008 estimate. The city is known to be the “Jubilee City”.
The area had been inhabited by Paleo-Indian and Native American tribes in as early as 9000 BC. Then, in 1540, the first European settlers came to the area. The community was established as “The Village” in 1763 but was established as Daphne in 1874. When the original county seat of Baldwin County, Blakely, was destroyed in the Civil War, Daphne was made the county seat. Then, the county seat was moved to Bay Minette in 1900. Daphne was incorporated in 1927.
