Tanzania)
or Dar es Salaam accommodation? Dar es Salaam, formerly known as Mzizima, is the largest city in Tanzania. Dar es Salaam is also the country's richest city and is an important economic center for the region. The city started out as a fishing village in the mid-19th century but has now become one of East Africa's most important ports and trading centers. It features a great atmosphere and mix of African, Muslim and South Asian influences along with a picturesque harbor and beach. Dar es Salaam was previously only known as a port of call on the way to more exotic destinations. However, it has now made a name for itself in the tourist industry.
Aside from exploring the wonderful beaches of Dar es Salaam, there are other destinations worthy of the tourist's time. Tourists should definitely go on a tour to the Makumbusho Village Museum where all the houses are seen as following a certain type of building or architecture as done by ethnic groups. Nguma dance shows are also held in the museum from 2-6 pm on certain days. There are many beaches in Dar es Salaam, not many of them are public beaches. The Bahari Beach hotel offers an entry or hotel charge for non-guests, many of the beaches in Kigamboni or "South Beach" have been sold to developers so entrance to some of the beaches require a fee, as well as the South Beach Resort hotel. Day trips are popular in Dar es Salaam. Day trips usually take tourists to Bongoyo Island. Hiking is also a popular activity that tourists shouldn't miss because this will give them a chance to explore and see the wonders of the city on foot. Hiking is done in the Pugu Hills. Dar es Salaam does not fall short on choices for the night scene. There are many night clubs in the city, the most popular of which is Bilicanas. For a more chilling and relaxing night scene, tourists can go to the Mediterraneo Lounge where a large collection of chill-out music is played. Before leaving the city, tourists can buy souvenirs and authentic items such as the Kangas which can be bought on Kariakoo market and local tinga-tinga paintings which can be found at the Slipway market.
