The city is also well known for the University of California (Davis) and for its liberal politics. The city is the largest in the county.
The city was originally named as Davisville after Jerome C. Davis who was a prominent local farmer. The community had congregated around the Southern Pacific Railroad which was constructed in 1868. By 1907, the local post office decided to shorten the town name to “Davis”. Soon, the name became widely used and when the city was incorporated in 1917, “Davis” was used instead of “Davisville”.
Davis is known for its Whole Earth Festival, the Mondavi Center, UC Davis Arboretum, and Toad Tunnel. It is also home to the Explorit Science Center, Wildhorse Golf Club, University of California-Davis: Gorman Museum, and the Davis Varsity Theatre. There are many hotels/lodges in Davis – the Aggie Inn, University Park Inn & Suites, and Best Western Palm Court Hotel, among others.
