It is located in the Doon valley, 230 km north of India's capital New Delhi and the Delhi metropolitan area. The district is surrounded by the Himalayas in the north, Sivalik Hills in the south, the river Ganga in the east, and the river Yamuna in the west.
The city has the beautiful hill of Mussoorie which has several attractions like The Forest Research Institute, the Robber's Cave, situated on the outskirts of the city, which is also a famous view point, and Tapovan which is the place where it is believed that Guru Dronacharya (of Mahabharata) had his ashram.
Dehradun is also home to the Tapkeshwar Temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is known for its association with Mahabharata; Dakpatthar which is a major tourist attraction that open the visitors to the beauty of Doon Valley and the Central Braille Press or Rashtriya Drishtibaditarth Sansthan Bharat which is the largest producer of Braille texts in India.
