or Delray Beach accommodation? Delray Beach, a city located in Palm Beach County in Florida, United States, began with the construction, in 1876, of the Orange Grove House of Refuge. Then, around 1884, a portion of land located just inland of the house was purchased by African-Americans who farmed the lot and created a settlement on it. Ten years after that, a new settlement was built west of the house; it was called Linton after William Seelye “Steel Cut” Linton who bought the land. The settlement soon established itself as a truck farming community that sells winter vegetables to northern towns.
After a hard freeze in 1898, the settlement, in 1901, decided to change its name into Delray to, somehow, ward off bad luck. Soon, the community saw a development boom along with the rest of Florida – paved streets and sidewalks, hotels, commercial establishments, etc. Because of these developments, Delray Beach soon became a popular tourist destination.
Today, Delray Beach is a home to various upscale restaurants, hotels, historic landmarks such as the John and Elizabeth Shaw Sundy House which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a cultural center, the Cornell Museum of Art and History, and Cason Cottage which is also a museum.
