It also has a nickname of “The Wicked Little City” and is known for being the set of the long-running popular Western drama “Gunsmoke”.

Dodge City began as Fort Mann, a settlement built in 1847 by civilians as a refuge for travelers of the Santa Fe Trail. The fort was attacked and destroyed by Indians the following year. In 1850, Fort Atkinson was built by the US Army on the site of the old fort. The fort was soon abandoned but replaced by Fort Dodge in 1865.

Henry J. Sitler, a rancher, built a house near the fort in 1871. The house was on the Santa Fe Trail and became a stopping point for weary travelers. Soon, more settlers came and the land slowly prospered. The arrival of the railroad in 1872 allowed the area to improve its cattle trade. The area became known for the cattle drives from Texas – in fact, a monument stands in the downtown area in the present day as tribute to these great cattle drives.

Today, the Santa Fe Trail Remains had been declared a National Historic Landmark. Other landmarks and attractions include the Boot Hill Museum, Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame, Historic Santa Fe Depot, and Dodge City Park.
