The town is located at the mouth of Donegal Bay, on the River Eske and under the Bluestack Mountains. The town’s name is derived from the Irish word Dun na nGail; in English which means Fort of the Foreigners (Vikings). Settlement of the down is recorded from prehistoric times. These are shown by the remains of a Dainsh fort destroyed by the High King of Ireland, Muircheratach MaCLochlainn in 1159. The Donegal castle located on the banks of the River Eske and the Franciscan abbey a located on the Southern shore of the Bay. These are remains of the settlement of the town during the 15th century. You will also be able to enjoy the many sandy beaches and go surfing. These beaches include Carrickfinn, Maghery Beach, Marble Hill Beah and Breaghy Head which are a few popular beaches of Donegal. Hiking the Bluestack Mounatins is also something to enjoy. The Donegal Railyway Centre is a great place to visit where tourist can learn about the old station that was open in 1889 and closed in 1960. The town was also host tothe World Rally Championship on February 1, 2009.
