Duncan is part of the Stafford Micropolitan Statistics Area. It is at the meeting point of the Arizona New Mexico state border and the Gila River. Duncan lies on both sides of the river, though the town’s main portion and the entire downtown area lie south of the river.

Founded in the mid nineteenth century, the land of Duncan was added to the United States as a part of the Mexican Cession. Destroyed twice by floods and once by fire, the majority of Duncan’s downtown area is currently vacant. The town is mostly resided in by Mormons, miners for the Phelps Dodge copper and silver mines and ranchers.

Duncan and its surrounding area is known worldwide for Native artifacts like arrowheads, burial sites, pottery, cave paintings and a variety of other remnants of the Anasazi cultures, among others.

Sandra Day O’Connor, US Supreme Court Justice grew up on Duncan on the Lazy B Ranch which straddles the New Mexico-Arizona border. O’Connor later wrote a book entitled ‘Lazy B: Growing up on a Cattle Ranch in the American Southwest’ which tells of her childhood experience in Duncan on the ranch with her brother H. Alan Day.
