or Durham accommodation? Durham is a town in County Durham in England, which sprang up around a castle, and a cathedral. The city is easily reached by air, via Newcastle Airport, by bus, train, and even by sea, thanks to the North Shields Ferry. This is a small city and one where most attractions can be reached on foot, so there’s very little need to hire a car. Two of the biggest attractions in Durham are the Norman Castle that was built in the 11th century, and is now the oldest student accommodation in the world, and the Durham Cathedral, that soars to sixty six meter tower, and offers amazing views over the city. Inside the Cathedral, you’ll also find the Treasures of Saint Cuthbert, which are hundreds of artifacts, as well as Saint Cuthbert’s own 7th century coffin! The Durham Covered Market is another historic treasure, which dates back to Victorian times, and features an old world tobacconist, and a sweet shop, among many other stalls and shops. Children will love the interesting Diggerland, which is a theme park, based on JCB’s, and lets visitors operate various earth moving machinery, and the town boasts a ghost walk tour as well. The Bridge Hotel serves up a Durham delicacy, Lamb Squab Pie, and while there are modern nightspots in town, why not have a pint at the Shakespeare Tavern, which is in a 12th century building, and reputed to be England’s most haunted pub. The Radisson SAS is situated near the city centre, making it convenient for most attractions, and if you’re on a tighter budget, the Travelodge is a good choice, and near the cathedral.
