Located in Middlesex County, Edison is the fifth largest municipality in New Jersey with a population of more than 97,000. Known for its low crime and good standards of living, the community has been named the 28th most livable city by Money Magazine. It was also among America’s 10 Best Places to Grow Up by US News and World Report.
Settlement in the area occurred as early as the 17th century and was originally known as Raritan Township. Thomas Edison made the Raritan Township his home in 1876, settling the development in the township called Menlo Park. It was here that he came up with the idea of the phonograph and of the light bulb filament.
Attractions worth a look when visiting Edison include Camp Kilmer, a WW II era army post, the Edison Landfill, the Edison Municipal complex, the Ford Motor Company Plant and Dismal Swamp, a preserved wetlands area. The Edison Tower and Menlo Park Museum is another place to visit to learn about the culture and history of this small city.
