The city got its name from having the second (which is “el Segundo” in Spanish) refinery of Standard Oil, now called Chevron Refinery, after the company purchased 840 acres of land in 1911; this nickname was used as city name when it was incorporated in 1917.
El Segundo has been the subject, setting/location, etc. of numerous movies, TV series, songs, and pictures; it was even featured in the show Ripley’s Believe It or Not for being among the very few cities in the U.S. where every street had a hill – still, this holds true of for the western residential section of the city.
Attractions in El Segundo include a portion of the Dockweiler State Beach, El Segundo High School which had been the site of numerous films and TV shows, the Old Town Music Hall, Lakes at El Segundo, and the practice facilities of the Los Angeles Kings and the Los Angeles Lakers.
