It became known as “the Rustbelt,” after it suffered several economic setbacks in the 70’s and 80’s. Today, Elyria City is a booming town, a retail center, and the headquarters of several big companies. It is also known as the county seat of the Lorain County, and the home of Lorain County Community College.

The city is traversed by the Black River, thus, it is teeming with green outdoors, blue waters, and abundant wildlife and fishes. In fact, for the past sixteen years, Elyria City has been recognized as a “Tree City USA” due to the number of forest parks found in the city such as the Findley State Park.

The history of Lorain County can be seen in the exhibits of memorabilia and artifacts at The Hickories. Among some of the impressive and historic structures that are considered as landmarks in the city are the Elyria Civil War Monument, the Train Depot, the Town Hall, and the Stone Tower. Other areas of interest include the Stocker Center Art Gallery, Finwood Estates, Nature Center, Ely Square Park, and North Park Sports Complex Ice Arena.

There are many year-round events in the city. Two of these are the annual Apple Festival and Jamie's Flea Market. The city’s Stocker Humanities & Fine Arts Center, on the other hand, showcases a variety of live music, dance and theater performances.
