It is an entirely plain countryside, which was once full of fens. The only elevations are in the Hümmling, which is a hilly forest area east of the Ems. Although the Emsland region is nowadays primarily a county among many others in Lower Saxony, it could be called a distinct sense of regional pride which will unlikely be found elsewhere in this region.
Once in the city the castles and gardens are a must see since they features standard majesty and extravagant splendor. The most famous is the Baroque Clemenswerth Castle in Sögel which boasts a fully preserved hunting lodge with central building and eight pavilions. The Baroque Castle Park is perfect for a stroll; while the enchanting cottage and herb gardens in Emsland are also worth a visit. They offer a contrast to the shiny conservatories of the large gardening.
Another highlight of the Emsland culture summer is the “Kleine Fest im großen Park” which is a small festival held in front of the Baroque backdrop of the Clemenswerth hunting lodge. The festival includes displaysof acrobatics, theatre, comedy, music, dance, entertainment, pantomime, cabaret and circus and is definately worth a visit. After visiting the main sights in Emsland you can also visit the Emsland Moor Museum which features an indoor and an outdoor exhibition of architecture and techniques of the Mooor people.
