It is located one hundred fifty three miles south of Los Angeles. Encinitas was incorporated in 1986 from the combined communities of historic Encinitas, new Encinitas, Leucadia, Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Olivenhain, California. Although combined, the communities have retained their distinctive flavors.

The single largest industry in Encinitas is the growing of poinsettias and other ornamental flowers. Encinitas can be divided into four districts. These include Old Encinitas, New Encinitas, Olivenhain, Leucadia and Cardiff-by-the-Sea. The Annual Fall Festival, which used to be known as the Poinsettia Festival is held in the downtown area each November. The largest rally of wooden bodied vehicles in the world called The Wavecrest Woodie Meet also takes place annually at Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas. An annual Oktoberfest held to coincide with the German Oktoberfest also takes place in new Encinitas.

Nearby attractions include the San Dieguito Heritage Museum, the Quail Botanical Gardens, Self-Realization Fellowship Temple and the La Paloma Theater. Popular activities include surfing at Swami’s, a place that has been featured in the Beach Boys’ song ‘Surfin USA.’
