Erice was founded in the 7th century BC by the Elymians, on the ruins of the Temple stands today the Castle of Venus, from the Norman times. While vacationing in Erice you may take a trip to the northeastern part of the city where you can view the relics of ancient Elymian and Phoenician walls indicating different stages of settlement and occupation in olden days. There are two castles that remain in the city, namely the Pepoli Castle, which dates from Saracen times, and the Venus Castle, dating from the Norman period. You may also take a ride on their cable car that runs from the outskirts of Trapani to the town of Erice. The historical center is encircled by Cyclopean walls of Punic origin.
Every summer Erice hosts the famous Week of Medieval and Renaissance Music, which attracts internationally famous artists for you to enjoy.
