It owns 37 square kilometers of land and is inhabited by 7,590 residents comprised of 74.49% White, 21.86% African American, and other races (based on the 2000 Census). It belongs to the Daphne–Fairhope–Foley Micropolitan Statistical Area and uses the Baldwin County Public Schools system.
Foley was founded by a Chicago businessman, John Burton Foley, who inherited the land investments of his brother John Garrett. Together with Cornelius Vandervilt, his prep school friend, he built a railway station in the area. The community was established and named after Foley.
