Officially founded by the Arkansas Territorial Legislature in Little Rock, the city was named after Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate General. Even before the town was officially incorporated, the residents were already calling the area as Forrest’s Town so that by the 1870 incorporation, it became known as Forrest City.

One of the major historic attractions in Forrest City is the 100-year-old Becker House which currently houses the Forrest City Chamber of Commerce but had actually served various purposes all throughout the years; for example, it had once been an antique store. The FCC Forrest City (low and medium security prison) is located in the city and is sometimes considered to be a landmark. Other attractions include the St. Francis County Museum, Broadway Twin Cinema, and the Forrest City Country Club.
