Bean. Although the actual origin of it is often disputed, it is said that the town got its name from Sir Andrew Freeport who was a London Merchant in “The Spectator” written by Joseph Addison.
The first settlers arrived in 1700; the town was incorporated on February 14, 1789. It went on to develop 4 villages: Porter’s Landing, Mast Landing, Freeport Corner, and South Freeport – all of which are included in the National Register Harraseeket Historic District.
Visitors must not miss the attractions that Freeport has to offer – some of these are the Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park, Wolfe's Neck Farm, Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary, and the historical structures such as the Harrington House and Pettengill House both built around 1830.
