or Galesburg accommodation? The City of Galesburg is the seat of Knox County in Illinois, United States. The city has a total area of 44 square kilometers and is inhabited by 33,706 people, according to the 2000 Census.
The city was founded by a Presbyterian minister who came from New York, George Washington Gale; naturally, the area was named after him. In 1835, a committee from New York paid for a 17-acre land in Knox County. It was on this land that a settlement comprised of temporary cabins was built the following year. These settlers decided that there should be no permanent log cabin built inside the boundaries of the town.
Through the years, the area developed and became home to a manual labor college now called Knox College, the makers (Western) of the Gale automobile which was named for the town and the historic Carr Mansion which became the site of the only presidential cabinet meeting not held in Washington D.C.
Some of the attractions that tourists can find in the City of Gale are the Discovery Depot Children’s Museum, Orpheum Theatre, Carl Sandburg Historic Site, and the Knox County Scenic Drive. The city is also home to the annual Railroads Day Festival and the Black Earth Film Festival.
