Japan)
or Gifu accommodation? Gifu is the capital of Gifu prefecture, Japan, and can be reached by plane, train, or bus. There are buses available to get around Gifu or three Rent-a-Cycle stations for those who would prefer to see Gifu at a more leisurely pace.
Cormorant fishing occurs every year between May 11th and October 15th on the Nagara River. Gifu City is the only place where this tradition has continued, uninterrupted, for 1300 years. This fantastic event can be viewed either by boarding a viewing boat or watching from the banks of the river. Some of the viewing boats serve meals on board.
For those hungry for culture, there are many museums, art galleries and castles to choose from, but a couple of really interesting ones stand out. The Nawa Insect Museum was opened in 1919 and is the oldest insect museum in Japan. Familiar insects, as well as rare and attractive species from all over the globe are exhibited here. The building has great historical value and is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Then there is the Gifu Great Buddha, and at 13,7 meters tall, is the largest Buddha statue of this type in Japan. It is basketwork style, painted with lacquer and gold-plated.
At Cormorant Hermitage, you can see early scenes of cormorant fishing, the clothes of the fishing master and a cormorant fishing boat, there are 24 cormorants kept here, and you can actually watch them at work during the fishing season. The Nagara River Fireworks Festival is an experience on its’ own. Two rival newspapers sponsor this event, which results in two spectacular fireworks displays. Apart from the fireworks, there are also many food stalls lining the upper riverbanks, from which you can enjoy many different Japanese dishes.
When you visit Gifu, try to buy a Japanese umbrella or lantern to take home. It is the traditional industry of Gifu and both these items are made of hand-made paper, and really lovely.
There are many restaurants, bars, and cafes in Gifu, which have really good food selections of all types of food, local and foreign, so you are sure to find something to suit your palate. - Browse the Gifu Map or compare Gifu accommodation from Hotels, Motels, B&Bs,
