Being the largest town in the county formed from lands which previously belonged to the Carroll, Tallahatchie, Choctaw, and Yalobusha Counties that had been turned into Grenada County by an Act of Legislature passed on May 9 of 1879, Grenada was chosen to be the county seat by default.
During the 2000 Census, 14,879 were counted as permanent residents of the city of Grenada; with a total area of 77.6 square kilometers, the city has a population density of 191.8 per square kilometers. It is served by the Kirk Academy and the Grenada School District. Opportunities for adult literacy and basic education are also plenty with the Grenada Adult Education Center being the official GED testing center in the county.
