Italy)
or Grottaferrata accommodation? The small town of Grottaferrata lies on the slopes of the Alban hills, a few kilometers from the city of Rome, in the province of Rome, Italy. The Basilian Monastery of Santa Maria, which was built in 1004, is the reason for the town, by all accounts, as the settlement grew around the church and its abbey. The Abbey of Santa Maria de Grottaferrata still stands today, and is one of the main sights in the town; however, there have been many changes, repairs, and additions to the sprawling structure over the years, and very little remains of the original building. Also in the abbey, you will find the library, which contains over fifty thousand rare and priceless writings, most of which are by religious figures like St. Nilus, the original founder of the abbey. Pope Benedict IX is also buried in the abbey, having died there, and the building has since been made a Roman Basilica. While there may not be much to do in Grottaferrata aside from explore the Abbey, it’s well worth making the trip to see it if you are in Rome. - Browse the Grottaferrata Map or compare Grottaferrata accommodation from Hotels, Motels, B&Bs,
